Fairfield: Pioneers add seven to signing class

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Following 10 signings during the early period, the Sacred Heart University football team inked seven more student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. The class is made up of five offensive players, a defensive back and one kicker/punter.

Head Coach Mark Nofri on the signing class:

“I like the players that have signed with Sacred Heart. I think the coaches did a good job of evaluating the players and finding the players that fits our needs and schemes.”

“We have some guys that can come in and compete for playing time right away. We have filled some of the needs we have due to graduation.”

“The players we have signed are the right fit for SHU in terms of who we are and the type of player we are looking for both on and off the field.”

The newest Pioneers are:

Michael Argenziano

Hometown: West Sayville, NY

High School: Sayville

Position: Punter/Kicker

Height: 5-10

Weight: 180

About Argenziano

  • Earned Fourth-Team All-State honors.
  • Helped Sayville reach the quarterfinals of the Long Island Division III tournament.
  • Also earned All-State honors in soccer.
  • Sister Chloe plays soccer at Albany.

CJ Coombes

Hometown: Dellefonte, Del.

High School: Delaware Military Academy

Position: Star

Height: 6-0

Weight: 185

About Cole:

  • Earned All-District & All-Conference honors.
  • Selected for the DFRC Blue-Gold All-Star Game.
  • Recorded 61 tackles his senior year.
  • Added a trio of interceptions.
  • Produced five touchdowns and had a season-long run of 67 yards.

Elijah Ford

Hometown: Coatesville, Pa.

High School: Downingtown West

Position: Wide Receiver
Height: 6-3

  • Two-time First-Team All-Defensive selection and Second-Team All-Offensive.
  • Had 500 receiving yards and four touchdowns his senior year.
  • Ranked by Rivals.com as one of the top wide receivers in the state.
  • Finished 12th the 400m at the PIAA state meet.

Jake Smith

Hometown: Northvale, NJ

High School: Northern Valley Old Tappen

Position: Offensive Line

  • Helped North Valley Old Tappen reach the state playoffs.
  • Also a member of the wrestling team.

Gavin Susfolk

Hometown: Akron, NY

High School: Canisius

  • NYSSWA Fifth-Team All-State.
  • Buffalo News First-Team All-WNY
  • Monsignor Martin First-Team All-Catholic.
  • Earned the Trench Trophy as Western New York’s top senior lineman.
  • Helped Canisius to the championship game of the NY Monsignor Martin State Tournament.
  • Canisius offense averaged 346 yards and 32.6 points.

Curtis Whiting

Hometown: Hackensack, NJ

High School: Hackensack

  • Amassed 1,609 yards and 16 touchdowns his senior year.

Devin Young

Hometown: Binghamton, NY

  • Earned a spot on the Phil Steele All-CAA Third-Team as a kick returner and Fourth-Team wide receiver.
  • 2021 Second-Team All-CAA
  • Led the Black Bears with 54 receptions for 585 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Third in the CAA at 116.8 all-purpose yards per game, ranked third in the CAA and 14th in FCS at 26.6 yards per kick return.
  • Appeared in 12 games with eight starts as a sophomore. Registered 41 receptions for a career-best 593 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Saw action in all 14 games with three stats his rookie season.
  • Two-time All-State Selection at Binghamton HS.
  • Two-time All-Metro Elite 24.
  • Binghamton First Team All-Region Co-Performer of the Year.
  • Finished senior year with 1,549 all-purpose yards and 16 touchdowns
